How
We Work
Acres of Ice designs and deploys water infrastructure systems in collaboration with local communities, technical partners, and public institutions.
Each deployment follows a structured process:
We prioritise long-term operability, local ownership, and performance transparency.
Site assessment and feasibility evaluation
System design adapted to local topography and catchment type
Installation and seasonal calibration
Monitoring and performance documentation
Ongoing technical support and system optimisation
MEET THE TEAM
Our team brings together expertise in engineering, field operations, remote sensing, and data systems.
ABOUT THE FOUNDERS
Dr. Suryanarayanan
Balasubramanian
FOUNDER & CEO
Glaciologist turned entrepreneur, combining ice modeling, embedded systems and field experience to solve water scarcity in glacier-fed mountain communities.

I started my career with a mathematics degree, but a fellowship in Ladakh changed everything. Working as an apprentice to Sonam Wangchuk, I worked as a manager of ice stupa artificial glacier project.

This led me to pursue a PhD at Université de Fribourg(Swiss), where I developed weather-based physical models to predict ice reservoir volumes. My research revealed the key insights on how automation could make bigger and better ice reservoirs across other mountain regions.

In 2023, I co-founded Acres of Ice to translate that research into impact.
Basit Azfal
FOUNDER & CEO
I am an engineer turned serial entrepreneur passionate about building innovative and sustainable businesses. With a Master’s degree in Engineering and a background in business, I bring together technical expertise in engineering mechanics with strong commercial and strategic thinking.
Over the course of my career, I have worked on international projects across the UK, UAE, and India, gaining diverse experience in engineering and business environments. Today, I focus on entrepreneurship and venture building, currently developing my startup Acres of Ice while also working on two other business ventures aimed at creating scalable and forward-thinking solutions.
