Climate change is causing stress on water availabi

Climate change is causing stress on water availability in mountain regions like Ladakh. An estimated 20% of villages here are on the verge of abandonment by 2050. And Acres of Ice is making strides towards preventing that.Last year we worked in 12 villages storing 31.2 million liters of ice to supplement the water needed for agriculture. Two new international sites for Acres of Ice are u

Two new international sites for Acres of Ice are underway in Kyrgyzstan (yellow box in the map), with another one being installed soon in Nepal.However, ice reservoirs have been attempted and adopted in Kyrgyzstan as part of a multi-organisational collaboration since 2019! Eleven ice reservoirs were constructed in 2023 by @ifad_org , and another seven were confirmed in 2024 by the @fao. These are shown in blue triangles in the map. Community engagement is a crucial part of our work

Community engagement is a crucial part of our work. It is also one of the key reasons why the construction of ice structures continues to make a meaningful impact.Through household surveys, group discussions, and one-on-one conversations, we gather valuable insights into local challenges, community perspectives and understand impact. The automated ice reservoirs not only strengthen the community’s water security but also support the cultivation of additional agricultural land, contribute to the recharge of local hydrological systems, and, most importantly, provide hope by offering an alternative and reliable source of water.This year, we successfully recorded approximately 3.3 million litres of stored ice in Ursi and 1.9 million litres in Tuna. Following the ice storage season, community surveys were conducted by @mehakdar19 in both villages to assess the outcomes and understand the social, environmental, and livelihood benefits of the reservoirs from the perspectives of the residents. Today is World Environment Day and the theme for this year is climate action. Acres of Ice began with the vision of addressing water scarcity by making science actionable. Over the last few years, we have been working hard to pilot projects in Ladakh and test the scalability of the automated ice reservoir project. Simultaneously, we have also been working to expand our automated irrigation systems to Kashmir.Addressing seasonal water scarcity in mountain regions has been the backbone of our work. One way to answer the question of scalability is to test the system across diverse mountain regions outside of Ladakh. In the coming weeks, we are heading to Kyrgyzstan and Nepal to install automated ice reservoir systems.We are very grateful to @klarna , @milkywire and @adb_hq to support us in this endeavour.#WorldEnvironmentDay #NowForClimate #hkh

Yesterday, Acres of Ice had the pleasure of hosting participants from the 2nd edition of the Leh Indian Glaciology Summer School 2026 #LIGSS2026 at the automated ice reservoir site in Sakti Village.The visit brought together young researchers and professionals from glaciology, geology, remote sensing, and climate science backgrounds for an engaging field interaction around climate adaptation and sustainable water solutions in the Himalayas.During the session, Brijraj (@brkacha553) explained how ice reservoir systems are planned and operated on the ground — covering site selection, water sourcing, pipeline networks, electronics, and overall system functioning. Discussions also focused on how different sites use different water sources, including snow-fed streams, glacial water, springs, and groundwater, depending on the geography and local conditions.Beyond the technical discussions, the interaction was filled with curiosity, meaningful conversations, and exchange of ideas across different domains. It was a wonderful experience hosting such passionate minds! Meet our teammate, Brijraj Kacha.Over the past year, Brijraj has been a core part of the Acres of Ice journey in Ladakh building and maintaining the electronics, fountain systems, and hardware that power our installations. As an embedded engineer, his work sits at the heart of making our systems function reliably in extreme conditions.Brijraj is driven by more than just engineering. His work aligns with our mission to support and strengthen mountain communities by addressing real, on-ground challenges. Outside of Acres of Ice, he is a licensed HAM radio operator and has volunteered during natural disasters, helping provide critical communication support in affected regions.#meettheteam #ladakh #climateaction

The @eurogeosciences held its general assembly in Vienna, and Acres of Ice was able to attend thanks to the help of @glaciers_alive. @karuna_sah spoke in the Mountain hydrology session on the drone-based volumetric surveys of our ice reservoirs that we have been conducting. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with the mountain research community, both to discuss scientific methodologies and approaches, to brainstorm novel ways to take our work forward, and to identify potential collaborations and field-based work yet to be done in Ladakh.#networking #climateaction #ladakh #EGU26

We hosted Shri Shubir Singh, IAS, Secretary of PHE and INFC Department, Leh, at our automated ice reservoir at Sakti. The site is now in its second year of operation with visibly better results compared to last year. We walked through the working of our AIRs- from understanding the system’s mechanics to discussing scalability. The dialogue reflected a shared curiosity for its impact and future potential.#ladakh #climateaction

Over the last few weeks, our team represented Acres of Ice across key platforms in Ladakh carrying forward conversations around water security, climate resilience and mitigation.At @nabardonline seminar at the Grand Dragon Hotel , Deepanshu presented our ongoing partnership highlighting projects in Chanigund (this year), and Ayee & Igoo (last year). The focus was on what these interventions are actually translating into on ground measurable water volumes, expected seasonal impact, and how ice reservoirs are strengthening local water systems.At the Department of Disaster Management, Basit represented Acres of Ice in discussions around GLOF mitigation, positioning our work as a systems-driven approach to risk reduction. Alongside this, we introduced an idea to channel glacial lake water into controlled ice reservoir systems reframing excess water from a potential hazard into a managed resource, while contributing to lowering GLOF risks at vulnerable regions.#ladakh #climateaction

Our team recently visited Sakti village to carry out key system upgrades, enhancing both safety and reliability. The outdated LCD box was replaced with a more user-friendly, durable, and aesthetically improved version, while the wiring harness was fully completed to eliminate potential disruptions.
We also reinforced the PCB supports and valve covers, followed by a thorough inspection of the camera and air systems to ensure smooth and efficient operation.
