2024 was a year incredible growth and achievements for Acres of Ice, and we couldn't be more proud of everything we've accomplished!

✨This year, we began construction of artificial ice reservoirs in 6 villages across Ladakh, strengthening water security in one of the most challenging landscapes.

✨We forged valuable partnerships with organizations focused on sustainability and climate resilience.

✨We also won awards ( @unmountainsmatter !) and recognition at the national and international levels for our innovative systems!

We are truly grateful for all the progress we have made since we started this company. None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of our dedicated team, partners, and everyone who believes in us. A big shout out to LAHDC, the Irrigation and Flood Control Department (Leh), @nabardonline , @glaciers_alive , CoverProject, @alsisarimpact for your support and collaboration.

Sakti is a large village with approximately 800 ho

Sakti is a large village with approximately 800 households, spread across the valleys of Chang La and Wari La Passes. The residents have traditionally relied on ice terraces for their agricultural water needs, particularly from the Wari La side, which features several layers of stone walls built down the valley. This year, with the assistance of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, we have established an automated ice reservoir system, which was inaugurated last week. Here are some behind-the-scenes photos from the installation, taken when the temperature was -16°C and snowy!

In the first week of December, Acres of Ice had the privilege of attending Parvat Manthan, a forum dedicated to enhanced service delivery in water, used water, and waste management for hill cities. Organised by the National Institute of Urban Affairs ( @niua_india ) at the India Habitat Centre, the event brought together representatives from 13 Himalayan states, as well as Nepal and Bhutan, to share knowledge, challenges, and successes, all in the pursuit of a climate-resilient future.

We presented a poster showcasing our work, which was included in the knowledge product "Untold Stories from the Himalaya: 20 Solutions for Water and Waste Management," published in a collaborative effort by NIUA and ICIMOD ( @_icimod ). The event fostered thought-provoking, open dialogue and conversations and potential collaborations with others addressing similar challenges.

Key takeaways:

- Significant efforts are underway to map, preserve, and restore springs across the Himalayan states, which aligns with the focus area of Acres of Ice.

- There is a notable gap in understanding groundwater systems and slope hydrology, particularly regarding their socioeconomic status and system dynamics. This represents a critical area for future research and action, especially in Ladakh.

We are excited to contribute to these conversations and advanced solutions in climate adaptation and water management.

Today is International Mountain Day, a day recogni

Today is International Mountain Day, a day recognized by the @unitednations since 2003 to raise awareness about the impacts of climate change on mountain communities and promote sustainable development in these regions. This year's theme, "Mountain Solutions for a Sustainable Future—Innovation, Adaptation, and Youth", emphasizes the importance of building resilience and reducing vulnerabilities in mountain ecosystems.

We are proud to announce that our automated ice reservoir system, which exemplifies sustainable adaptation and climate resilience in Ladakh's trans-Himalayan region, has won the prestigious 2024 Mountain Future Award in the "Adaptation" category, presented by the @unmountainsmatter of the United Nations. We are truly grateful for this recognition.

Thanks to the prize fund from @forte_di_bard for this award, we are excited to introduce the Mountain Technology Fellowship, a one-year program based in Ladakh that aims to foster innovation and capacity-building in mountain technology, offering a chance to work hands-on in designing and implementing innovative systems. Likir, a village of around 200 households located

Likir, a village of around 200 households located in Sham Valley, is known for its apricots. At the start of the agricultural season, the village faces a seasonal water shortage, which mainly affects agrarian productivity due to the unpredictability of winter precipitation. In a collaboration with Leh's Irrigation and Flood Control Department, we have successfully installed our automated ice reservoir system in Likir and will continue to monitor it over the next several months.

Ursi is a small village located in the mountains b

Ursi is a small village located in the mountains between the Zanskar and Indus rivers. With around 20 households situated at an altitude of 3,700 meters, the village relies on spring water for sustenance. However, residents have been facing significant water shortages at the beginning of the agricultural season. Many locals have reported that these issues have developed over the past two decades, negatively impacting their livelihoods.

To address these challenges, the community began constructing ice reservoirs a few years ago, achieving moderate success. This year, with funding from @mercycorps, we have installed our automated system in Ursi. The system is now operational and successfully constructing ice during the cold weather periods. Due to the limited network connectivity in the village, we are closely working with the villagers whom we have trained to assist with maintenance and data collection.

We have successfully installed our automation syst

We have successfully installed our automation system in Ayee village, located in Nubra Valley. Three fountains are now spraying water, and with the recent cold temperatures, ice has finally started to form. Ayee has approximately 40 households that rely on spring water for their needs.

For the past five winters, the village has been building ice reservoirs, led by the Youth Association. Last winter, we connected with the community and conducted a preliminary site survey. During our visit, we observed their ice structure and discussed the challenges they faced during the construction process and potential improvements.

This year, the project is funded by @nabardonline, and our entire team traveled to Ayee to set up the system. We also conducted drone surveys, taught the villagers how to operate the system, and addressed any issues on-site.

The fountain is an important aspect of ice reservoir construction. How water is sprayed, the area it covers and the size of the water particles as they freeze all determine the way the water droplets transform into ice. Our fountains are all 3D printed in-house, giving us complete control of this process.
